Unique purplish colored Arizona Petrified Wood
The petrified wood was formed about 225-250 million years ago. This tree was once a living tree that was turned to stone that was buried in mud, sand or volcanic ash millions of years ago. The water was seeping into the mud and sand into the logs. There it filled the empty cells of the decaying wood with the mineral material until the whole structure became solid stone.
The water provided the silica for petrification of the wood also contained other minerals which were added to the petrifying process. Iron, is found in wood, which then produced various colors such as: red, yellow and brown. Copper was found during the petrification process causing the blue, and green colors. Manganese and carbon added the black.
